Arsene Wenger insists he is not close to signing any new players but has refused to confirm or deny interest in Per Mertesacker.
The giant Germany defender has been repeatedly linked with the Gunners this summer as they search for additional replacements for Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre.Wenger has already signed Laurent Koscielny this summer and he is thought to be interested in Udinese's Cristian Zapata.
But after Sunday's victory over Celtic, which clinched the Emirates Cup, the Frenchman insisted he was "not close to signing anybody".
Asked if Mertesacker would fit the bill, he said: "I wouldn't like to comment on names because it raises the price straightaway 50 per cent."
